Why You Shouldn't Sign Up (Unless You're Truly Ready)

Let's be clear: If you glance at "36km" and think, "Easy," or if your Trail running experience is limited, the Hampta Pass Sky Traverse is NOT for you !!!. This isn't a average trail run race. This 36km odyssey demands respect.

  • Altitude is relentless: Every breath will be tested. Proper acclimatization is absolutely essential; we highly recommend arriving in Manali a minimum of 5-7 days prior to race day.

  • Technical terrain: Expect unwavering focus with every foot placement, including unpredictable rocky and moraine close to glaciers.

  • River crossings: You will get wet (and cold!).

  • Extreme solitude: The only sounds will be your own heartbeat and the mountain wind – no cheering crowds or aid stations every kilometer.

  • Extreme weather: Temperatures will be freezing around the pass, with any precipitation likely being snow. However, as you descend closer to Manali, you could face extreme heat and the risk of sunstroke. Be prepared for drastic temperature shifts.

If your comfort zone is paved roads and predictable conditions, if you haven't truly trained for the raw, unpredictable embrace of the high Himalayas, and if the thought of earning your finisher's medal in the wild, far from concrete, doesn't ignite your spirit, then perhaps save your registration for another race. This is exclusively for those who crave the extraordinary and are prepared to truly earn their stripes in the mountains.

The Route: A Journey Through History & Mythology

Your adventure begins in the stark, captivating landscapes of the Lahaul Valley, at Chattru (3300m). From this remote starting point, you will immediately begin your formidable ascent towards the legendary Hamta Pass.

Ascending to the Gods' Realm: The trail gradually steepens, leading you through a dramatic transition of landscapes. As you climb, the air thins, and the views open up to reveal the majestic CB (Chandra Bhaga) Range, with its towering, snow-capped peaks. This challenging climb culminates at the summit of Hamta Pass (4300m), a historical trade route that once connected the Kullu Valley with the Spiti Valley and further into Ladakh and Tibet. Imagine the ancient traders, with their horses and mules laden with goods, making this very crossing, forging a vital link between the fertile south and the arid trans-Himalayan regions. This pass was their "high road" to Dana Bazaar (the old name for Manali, meaning 'grain market'), where they would barter and trade before their arduous return journey.

The Adobe of Lord Indra: As you traverse this high-altitude corridor, you are literally running through the heart of local legends. The area east of Hamta Pass is believed to be the sacred abode of Lord Indra, the King of Gods. Local folklore speaks of him residing in the 'Killa' (fortress) and holding his divine court on Indrasan (Indra's Throne) – a prominent, pointed peak in the area. Adjacent to Indrasan is Deo Tibba, a large flat-topped mountain where other gods are said to gather for Indra's court. You'll also witness other mystical peaks like Inder Killa and Inder Sui along your journey, adding a profound, spiritual dimension to every step.

Descent into the Lush Kullu Valley: From the pass, the route shifts to a thrilling descent into the verdant Kullu Valley. You'll navigate through the picturesque trails of Galu Gera, Jobri, where the landscape transforms from barren high-altitude terrain to lush alpine meadows and dense forests. The trail then follows the winding mountain road towards the charming village of Sethan.

The Final Push to Manali: A sharp, exhilarating shortcut will guide you down into the quaint village of Prini. From here, the final kilometers weave you through a series of small trails and village paths. Your extraordinary journey concludes with a triumphant finish at the iconic Mall Road in Manali, the adventure and tourism capital of Himachal Pradesh.
