The Rohtang Pass 100km Ultra Challenge: Conquer Your Endurance!

Run the Himalayas. Get UTMB Index

UTMB Index 100K

Prepare for the ultimate test of grit and spirit at the Rohtang Pass 100km Ultra Challenge, the crown jewel of the Manali Marathon 3.0!

This thrilling and undeniably challenging race, embarking and culminating at the vibrant Manali Mall Road (elevation approx. 1950m), offers a unique blend of breathtaking Himalayan grandeur and an unparalleled endurance trial.

This isn't just a race; it's a mesmerizing journey deep into the heart of the Himalayas, where you'll battle not only against fellow competitors but also against the raw, untamed landscape and the formidable altitude. The course will take you from the lively Manali Mall Road to the monumental ascent to Rohtang Pass (elevation approx. 3980m), before making the return journey to Manali.

The route is predominantly 95% tarmac, ensuring a relatively consistent running surface, with some strategic gravel sections adding to the true trail experience. You'll navigate a challenging out-and-back course, featuring a substantial cumulative elevation gain of approximately 2030m (from Manali to Rohtang Pass) and an equally demanding cumulative elevation loss of approximately 2030m on your return. This continuous ascent and descent demand extreme physical and mental resilience.

Why the Rohtang Pass Ultra Challenge is Your Ideal 100km Debut:

Despite its inherent difficulty, the Rohtang Pass Ultra Challenge stands out as one of India's best races to undertake your first 100km ultra-marathon, thanks to its exceptional support system.

The race kicks off at midnight (00:00hrs) on September 21st, offering a unique experience of running under the star-lit Himalayan sky. What truly sets this race apart is our commitment to your success: we provide a dedicated support vehicle (car or van) to follow each runner!

Imagine this: as you push through the darkness, tackling the challenging inclines, you'll know your dedicated vehicle is right behind you. This isn't just about peace of mind; it's about unparalleled logistical support that allows you to focus purely on your run:

  • Always Hydrated & Fueled: Your vehicle will carry all your hydration and aid needs, ensuring you have immediate access to your preferred drinks and nutrition without relying solely on fixed aid stations.
  • Gear on Demand: Need an extra layer as the temperature drops near the pass? Want to switch shoes for different sections? Your dedicated support vehicle means your spare clothing, shoes, and other essential gear are always within reach. No more cumbersome drop bags or waiting at distant checkpoints.
  • Personalized Care in the Dark: Running in the pre-dawn hours at altitude can be daunting. Having your support vehicle provides a constant source of light, encouragement, and a familiar face, making those solitary miles feel less alone.
  • Safety First: In the unpredictable Himalayan environment, with rapidly changing weather and altitude effects, having a dedicated vehicle and team closely monitoring your progress is an invaluable safety net.

The Ultimate Endurance Test:

The weather in the Himalayas is notoriously unpredictable. While the valley floor can experience hot conditions during the day, the higher reaches near Rohtang Pass will likely be freezing, with the distinct possibility of snow and other precipitation. This dramatic shift in temperature and conditions, coupled with the significant altitude, presents the ultimate test of your endurance. As the sun rises, the breathtaking vistas will motivate you, but the intense mountain sun at altitude can also pose a risk. Our dedicated team of medical and first responders will be strategically placed along the route to ensure your safety and address any concerns promptly.

Why You Shouldn't Sign Up (Unless You're Truly Ready)

Let's be clear: If you glance at "36km" and think, "Easy," or if your trail running experience is limited, the Hamta Pass Sky Traverse is NOT for you!!! This isn't an average trail run race. This 36km odyssey demands respect.

  • Altitude is relentless: Every breath will be tested. Proper acclimatization is absolutely essential; we highly recommend arriving in Manali a minimum of 5–7 days prior to race day.
  • Technical terrain: Expect unwavering focus with every foot placement, including unpredictable rocky and moraine close to glaciers.
  • River crossings: You will get wet (and cold!).
  • Extreme solitude: The only sounds will be your own heartbeat and the mountain wind – no cheering crowds or aid stations every kilometer.
  • Extreme weather: Temperatures will be freezing around the pass, with any precipitation likely being snow. However, as you descend closer to Manali, you could face extreme heat and the risk of sunstroke. Be prepared for drastic temperature shifts.

If your comfort zone is paved roads and predictable conditions, if you haven't truly trained for the raw, unpredictable embrace of the high Himalayas, and if the thought of earning your finisher's medal in the wild, far from concrete, doesn't ignite your spirit, then perhaps save your registration for another race. The Route: A Journey Through History & Mythology

Your adventure begins in the stark, captivating landscapes of the Lahaul Valley, at Chattru (3300m). From this remote starting point, you will immediately begin your formidable ascent towards the legendary Hamta Pass.

Ascending to the Gods' Realm: The trail gradually steepens, leading you through a dramatic transition of landscapes. As you climb, the air thins, and the views open up to reveal the majestic CB (Chandra Bhaga) Range, with its towering, snow-capped peaks. This challenging climb culminates at the summit of Hamta Pass (4300m), a historical trade route that once connected the Kullu Valley with the Spiti Valley and further into Ladakh and Tibet. Imagine the ancient traders, with their horses and mules laden with goods, making this very crossing, forging a vital link between the fertile south and the arid trans-Himalayan regions. This pass was their "high road" to Dana Bazaar (the old name for Manali, meaning 'grain market'), where they would barter and trade before their arduous return journey.

The Adobe of Lord Indra: As you traverse this high-altitude corridor, you are literally running through the heart of local legends. The area east of Hamta Pass is believed to be the sacred abode of Lord Indra, the King of Gods. Local folklore speaks of him residing in the 'Killa' (fortress) and holding his divine court on Indrasan (Indra's Throne) – a prominent, pointed peak in the area. Adjacent to Indrasan is Deo Tibba, a large flat-topped mountain where other gods are said to gather for Indra's court. You'll also witness other mystical peaks like Inder Killa and Inder Sui along your journey, adding a profound, spiritual dimension to every step.

Descent into the Lush Kullu Valley: From the pass, the route shifts to a thrilling descent into the verdant Kullu Valley. You'll navigate through the picturesque trails of Galu Gera, Jobri, where the landscape transforms from barren high-altitude terrain to lush alpine meadows and dense forests. The trail then follows the winding mountain road towards the charming village of Sethan.

The Final Push to Manali: A sharp, exhilarating shortcut will guide you down into the quaint village of Prini. From here, the final kilometers weave you through a series of small trails and village paths. Your extraordinary journey concludes with a triumphant finish at the iconic Mall Road in Manali, the adventure and tourism capital of Himachal Pradesh.
